P. Ann became interested in theater
as a result of working with Donald Lawrence (formerly Music Director for Stephanie
Mills) in Your Arms Are Too Short. Next, she landed a principal role in Sing
Hallelujah, a gospel musical which played at the Cincinnati Playhouse In The
Park. After a sellout run in Cincinnati, the production (co-produced by Aretha
Franklin's Jerry Wexler) moved to New York City. There, the show ran successfully
at the Village Gate. The New York reviews sang praises of P. Ann as a talented
newcomer.
After the show completed its New York run, P. Ann returned
to Cincinnati where she hosted a mid-day radio show with a friendly chatter
format and an open request line for Classic Oldies from the 60's and 70's. But
soon her love for musical theatre beckoned once again and she found herself
starring as Olivia Dark, the sexy, singing villainess of a "A Woman Like
That," playing opposite Peabo Bryson.
Shortly after that, the New York Director/Choreographer,
Obba Babbatunde of Dreamgirls’ fame, asked P. Ann to perform in the roles of
Aunt Em and Glinda in the star-filled production of The Wiz playing at LaComedia
Dinner Theatre in Ohio. He convinced P. Ann by saying, "Aunt Em sets the
tone for the opening of my show and Glinda provides a quality and sensuality,
not seen throughout. I need you!" The reviews for the sultry singer
echoed Obba`s beliefs and can still be heard even today.
